There is BBQ Sauce and THEN there is Peach BBQ Sauce.
It’s a MUST MAKE item on my canning to do list. Commercial BBQ Sauce just will not cut it after trying this for the first time a few years ago. Local juicy peaches captured in a jar in all their summery glory, the red pepper reduced to a few glorious flecks of colour, zippy hot pepper flakes and the sweetness of honey to round it all out, it truly is the taste of summer!
This BBQ sauce is a natural with shredded pork, in a crock pot with chicken or chops and absolutely worth making if only to have it slathered on slow roasted, garlic and cumin crusted ribs. You must put this on your to do list NOW!
Zippy ‘n’ Zesty Peach BBQ Sauce
(from Bernardin Complete Book of Home Preserving, 2006)
This recipe makes 8 8 oz (250ml) jars, but sterilize an extra two just in case!
6 cups peaches, chopped, pitted and peeled
1 cup red pepper, seeded and finely chopped
1 cup finely chopped onion
3 tbsps minced garlic
1 1/4 cups liquid honey
3/4 cup cider vinegar
1 tbsp Worchestershire sauce
2 tsps hot pepper flakes
2 tsps dry mustard
2 tsps table salt
Prep everything in advance because it all heads into the pot all at once. Somewhere in the middle of peeling and chopping 6 cups of slimy peaches, your fingers resembling raisins, you might be questioning whether this recipe will be worth it… rest assured that I would never make anyone do all this work if the results wouldn’t be spectacular!
Once you’ve got everything in the pot, take just a moment to admire this fine, hot mess. You just can beat the colours here, sweet, savory, spicy nestled in together. The only thing better is how heavenly this smells as it cooks and comes together, I wish I could capture this smell and post it for you in a scratch and sniff blog! MMM.
Bring to a boil then reduce to medium high heat for about 25 minutes. I do not chop the peaches as finely as I should, instead I break up the peach chunks with a potato masher about of the third of the way in. 25 minutes is a guideline – you want everything to be broken down, and fairly runny, similar to a commercial sauce.
Process for 15 minutes in a water bath. Use liberally!

This sounds so good! I think your zesty peach bbq sauce would be excellent on grilled pork chops!! I am not sure of the canning process, but I might have to give this a try. Thanks for the recipe:)
Completely unexpected combination. I accept the challenge to make BBQ sauce with peaches. Nice photos. Thanks for a great post. Love the Tiramisu!
I love making barbeque sauce from fresh, local fruit. This looks like a great recipe! Thanks for sharing.
This looks amazing! I can totally see why it’s a MUST MAKE! p.s… I just made passionfruit bbq sauce and it rocked my world!
OMG Passionfruit BBQ Sauce? Sounds incredible!
This sounds so good. I kinda wish you could make a scratch and sniff sticker too but your descriptions were a great substitute. Can’t wait to read more of your recipes and posts.
I’ll save this to try out, sounds delicious!
Could you please tell me how long does it lasts? Do we keep it in the fridge? I’m asking because it also seems like a good gift too.
If you process it in a water bath (canning) it will last a year or longer if stored in a cool, dark place.
I have not tried storing it in the fridge without preserving with a water bath. My guess would be it would last a week or so in that case.
Thank you so much!
I wish you could see my face right now as I read your post. I am absolutely beaming! I just bought a ton of peaches yesterday (some to make sorbet with) and now I am definitely looking forward to making your BBQ sauce to eat on my chicken. I love spicy! Thanks for sharing one hot recipe with me on Sweets for a Saturday. You’re a peach!!!
Hey Lisa, if you love spicy you might want to add a bit more red pepper flakes or even some cayenne pepper to the BBQ Sauce – on it’s own it has just a hint of zip but I wouldn’t say it is spicy! Enjoy
Oooh, wish I still had some peaches left over from the weekend! Thank you so much for joining Fat Camp Friday! See you next week!

I just made your peach barbecue sauce, spiced it up with more red pepper flakes, sriracha sauce, and chipotle chili powder, and it is sooooo good. I couldn’t stop tasting it and can’t wait to put it on my chicken tonight for dinner. Thanks again for one amazing recipe. I’m gonna have to make it again this summer with all the peaches that are on sale.
